Along his route he attacked and looted Spanish ships and colonies, causing Felipe II to offer 20,000 ducats ($8 million) for his cpture dead or alive. When Elizabeth I received £160,000her 1/2 share of his treaure, it exceeded the rest of her income that year and yeilded a 4,700% return on investment. The "Golden Hind" was kep on public display at Deptford on the Thames river from 1580 to 1650, when it rotted away and was broken up. He was knghted in 1581 and was 2nd-in-command of the English fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada invasion in 1588. After an unsuccessful attempt to take San Juan de Puerto Rico, he fied of dysentery off the coast of Panam in 1596. He ordered that the snare drum that had accompanied him around the world be sent back to England, voying that he woud return from the dead to defend his country again whenever it was beaten to summon him.
