The Soldier Prince

My heart went out to the soldier prince –
How could anyone not love and cherish him?
For he has known sorrow to the zenith degree.

The wicked arrow of fate robbed him
Of who was too precious to lose,
But in his mother’s eyes, beautiful as they were
Was the conviction that
She would be ever near
To her younger son, the dear.

In remotest dominion,
The prince sought to leave his mark
Through ice, snow, sleet and rain –
He beat back the caustic acidity of wind
From pole to pole,
To savannah and jungle
And ploughed a caring way
In his heart, in his mind.

The memory and knowledge
Of the physical absent one –
One who had vowed
To be permanently close
Was in his dealing
With near-lost tribes.

Though the heat was soaring,
The mosquitoes and thick shroud
He sought his way in his mind.

There were two tours of duty
And the sad aftermath
Of military death and injury –
Long live the brave – who, in uniform or out
Protect our verdant lands!

Long live those who, in peril,
Receive such terrible physical
Moral and psychological injuries!

But our prince would not let
The sun go down too easily

Invicta games into play
And with custodians of valour consumed
With a drink, shared in solace,
Past knowledge –
And to a toast with a comrade
The soldier prince quaffed his fill
And watched the day fit dawn
In a silent hymn
Of praise and relief

Dawn Light

Dawn light, moonlight
In finest reverie
See how dappled golden
Are those sentiments
Between you and me
In a vacuum of fright
She puts the world to right.

So who is this beauteous Queen?
With emerald and stone she is seen
Why? She is glorious morning
When songbirds caress the day
And in her array
Is an arrow sheaf of desire.

Long has she tasted the rays of Aries,
Such is the sentiment of fire,
Dawn light in dappled furore
Sheds a distant tear to the moon
Which hides behind
A rainbow shaft of dew.

See how the mirage dances,
First the one step of ancient grey,
Then to the beginnings of day,
Bringing in a chorus of dancing girls,
All lights with lustre of pearl –

Now! Glimpse what is below
The rainbow majesty of the Queen
Why? Can that be a cat
Who longs to be seen?
Such a perfect purr needs one to say
She is the loveliest of gifts
On a summer’s day
So now! Expect the unexpected
And greet it too
With a sibilant and loving heart;
It is the music
To dawn light and the arc.

Of State and Regency

August is such majesty
That weathers the tempest
Of an indeterminant life
For who can know
On which earthly scene
The bondage of flesh and blood leads us?

But you, O Supreme Lady
Have cast indifference aside,
And have cast smiles like pearl ripples
On the tides and waters of life!

What you have and do offer
Is intelligent compassion
Mixed with a genius
That quietens the unruly,
The unruly rule of its days
And many ways.

What corruptions you know of
You treat with an austere wisdom
Which brokers fools not gladly.

Smile, my lady, smile!
And you will cast a spell
For reverence on your age.

The page daily needs no script
That is not written
With compassionate need.

And as you cast your eyes
On a plethora of busyness
You so rightly judge,
With your wisdom
Garnered over your ninety years, fairly.

You stand in shafts of pure light
Which stream forth
From the heart of heaven.

Supremely regal, your humane response
To daily dilemmas does not interfere
With your duties
Of wife, mother and Grande Dame
To your people.

Long may you reign,

Estimable body of Regal Queen
Elizabetha Regina.
