"I Am From You Are My Sunshine"

I am from microwaves
and TV trays,
I am from pizza and movies
on Friday nights,
I am from a single parent
meaning Mommy and Me nights.

I am from Dayton, Ohio
to Manning, SC,
I am from city lights
to star lights.
I am from violent neighborhoods
to calm lake waters.

I am from Mommy working
3-4 jobs at a time,
I am from a loving mother
who provides for me,
I am from struggling times
yet support from every angle,
I am from You Are My Sunshine
and you still are.
You Are My Sunshine -- Maria Chiara Arconte

  1. Jimmie Davis was born into a sharecropper family in northern Louisiana, one of 11 children. He was not sure if he was born in 1899, 1901, 1902, or 1903, and he did not have a bed to sleep in until he was 9. However, he received a master's degree in 1927 from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. During his long career as a performer he released more than 40 albums of music. He parlayed the considerable success of "You Are My Sunshine" credited to him and Charles Mitchell into 2 terms as governor (1944-1948, 1960-1964) and into consideraton as George C. Wallace's vice presidential nominee on the American Independent Party ticket in 1968. In his 2nd term he complted the cantilever Sunshine Bridge over the Mississippi river, at the time the only bridge between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. However, he had bought the rights to the song from Paul Rice for $35, and it was recorded twice in 1939 (including once by the Rice Brothers Gang) before his own hit version in 1940 and went on to become one of the most covered songs in American history.

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me and love another
You'll regret it all some day

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me and love another
You have shattered all of my dreams
