Ded Hasan (Grandpa Khasan), the most influential mafia boss in the former USSR, was killed by a sniper in Moscow on 16 January. After he was shot in the head, a bystander who was in the way was also shot in the thigh and chest; when she fell, the killer was able to fire into the wounded crime boss again. He died 10 minutes after arriving at a nearby hospital. Aslan Usoyan, a Yezidi Kurd, was born in Tbilisi, Georgis, in 1937, and was 1st jailed in 1956 for pickpoting. He acquired status as a "Vor v Zakone" (thief in law) while serving time for speculation between 1966-1968, establishing his criminal credentials, and in the 1980s moved into the profitable area of forcing black marketeers to pay protection money. He controlled groups that dealt in illegal gambling, arms and drug trafficking, and the theft of natural resources across central and southern Russia, and the sole keeper of the obshchak, the all-Russian thieves' common fund.
